{"id":213,"date":"2016-06-30T15:42:15","date_gmt":"2016-06-30T12:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kustr.org\/kuskayitkomitesi\/?p=213"},"modified":"2018-09-12T16:26:05","modified_gmt":"2018-09-12T13:26:05","slug":"around-the-region-2016-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kustr.org\/kuskayitkomitesi\/osme-atr\/around-the-region-2016-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Around the Region 2016-1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Nizamettin Yavuz, Kerem Ali Boyla<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the winter of 2015 2016 has been generally very mild, however a short period of extreme cold temperatures occurred and attracted many northern migrants to move down to the Black Sea Coastland of Turkey. <strong>Common Eider<\/strong> <em>Somateria mollissima <\/em>has been seeing more frequently and extensively, a record count of 5 birds has been seen at the Sea of Marmara near Hersek Lag\u00fcn\u00fc between 6 and 20 Jan and three in Istanbul on 2 Feb. A single <strong>Horned Grebe<\/strong> <em>Podiceps auritus<\/em> was seen at \u0130\u011fneada, K\u0131rkareli on 8 Jan, and a single <strong>Common Scoter<\/strong> <em>Melanitta nigra<\/em> was at the traditional site at Ye\u015fil\u0131rmak Delta together with 52 <strong>Velvet Scoter <\/strong><em>Melanitta fusca<\/em> on 20 Jan. A single <strong>Common Merganser<\/strong> <em>Mergus merganser<\/em> was also at \u0130\u011fneada on 9 Jan.<\/p>\n<p>Most raptors were detected in the well observed Hatay province. A single <strong>Black-winged Kite<\/strong> <em>Elanus caeruleus<\/em> was on Mileyha, Hatay on 6 Feb, and another on 14 May on the known breeding site in \u015eanl\u0131urfa. A single <strong>Red Kite<\/strong> <em>Milvus milvus<\/em> was seen during passage over Hatay Suba\u015f\u0131, which indicate a wintering presence in the Middle East. A wintering bird as been seeing at Manyas Ku\u015f G\u00f6l\u00fc on 22 Jan. A single <strong>Lesser Kestrel<\/strong> <em>Falco naumanni<\/em> overwintered at Mileyha, Hatay on 9 Jan.<\/p>\n<p>Seawatching in Mileyha reveiled a <strong>Scopoli\u2019s Shearwater<\/strong> <em>Calonectris diomedea<\/em> on 22 Feb, and 5 Mar. A single <strong>Lesser Flamingo<\/strong> <em>Phoeniconaias minor<\/em> at Lake Kulu between 28 Mar and 5 Apr may relate to the individual observed continuously in the previous years. A single <strong>Squacco Heron<\/strong> <em>Ardeola ralloides<\/em> on 2 Jan at Samsun, Kurupelit Harbour indicate repeated overwintering records. A staggering group of 75 <strong>Demoiselle Crane<\/strong> <em>Grus virgo <\/em>was seen on 23 Mar in Lake Mogan. At the same site there were 5 <strong>Little Bustard<\/strong> <em>Tetrax tetrax<\/em> on 29 Feb. The rarest water record involve a single <strong>Caspian Plover<\/strong> <em>Charadrius asiaticus<\/em> on 4 Apr at G\u00f6ksu Delta. A single <strong>Great Black-backed Gull<\/strong> <em>Larus marinus<\/em> stayed very long in Istanbul ans been seeing between 1 Jan and 17 Mar several time at Lake K\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck\u00e7ekmece, \u0130stanbul. Other sighting includes two birds in Sultanahmet area on 2 Feb and 15 May, questioning the possible presence of a total of three birds in Istanbul. A good claim <strong>of European Herring Gull<\/strong> <em>Larus argentatus<\/em> is also photographed at the Black Sea Coast of Istanbul at Rumelifeneri on 16 Feb.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly the first <strong>Lesser Grey Shrike<\/strong> <em>Lanius minor<\/em> wintering in the country was recorded at Mileyha, Hatay on 9 Jan. A single <strong>Booted Warbler<\/strong> <em>Iduna caligata<\/em> was there on 12 Apr, a month earlier than the previous record. A single <strong>Grasshopper Warbler<\/strong> <em>Locustella naevia<\/em> was ringed on 23 May at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta. An <strong>Asian Desert Warbler<\/strong> <em>Sylvia nana <\/em>was seen on 29 Mar in Antalya, after repeated searches for the species following strong storms from the south; this species seems to be regularly at Antalya. Mileyha beach in Hatay produced again a good set of pipits, a single <strong>Blyth`s Pipit<\/strong> <em>Anthus godlewskii<\/em> overwintered between 9 Jan and 26 Mar and three <strong>Buff-bellied Pipit<\/strong> <em>Anthus rubescens<\/em> between 2 Jan and 6 Feb. A visiting birder successfully detected a <strong>Trumpeter Finch<\/strong> <em>Bucanetes githagineus<\/em> at \u00c7\u0131ral\u0131 Beach, Antalya on 1 May.
