During second half of 2016, birders were not able to add a new species to the country\u2019s checklist, however several 3rd and 4th records of some very rare species have been produced.<\/p>\n

The last months of 2016 already experienced some cold weather, which brought some northern species down to the Black Sea coastland. Singles of Red-breasted Goose<\/strong> Branta ruficollis<\/em> were recorded in Trabzon on 9 Dec, in K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 18 Dec and two birds on 19 Dec at Manyas G\u00f6l\u00fc. The Egyptian Goose<\/strong> Alopochen aegyptiaca<\/em> has been regularly sighted near Ankara and a flock of 12 birds at the flood control pond of Mogan G\u00f6l\u00fc indicates the presence of an established population in the area. There were two possible Scaup<\/strong> Aythya marila<\/em> on A\u011fa\u00e7l\u0131, \u0130stanbul on 22 Oct, 5 at Karacabey Longozu on 13 Nov and 1 at Sapanca G\u00f6l\u00fc on 6 Nov. Finally a record count of 9070 White-headed Duck<\/strong> Oxyura leucocephala<\/em> came from Lake Manyas, today the most important wintering site for the species, on 14 Dec.<\/p>\n

The winter also brought fair number of Horned Grebe<\/strong> Podiceps auritus <\/em>to the Black Sea coastland, 1 at Trabzon on 8 Dec, at \u00c7anakkale on 4 Dec, a group of 4 at a small damlake at G\u00fcm\u00fc\u015fhane on 9 Nov. A pelagic trip to the waters off Didim brought a record count of 100 Storm Petrel<\/strong> Hydrobatos pelagicus<\/em> on 27 Aug.<\/p>\n

Seven Sociable Lapwing<\/strong> Vanellus gregarius<\/em> were recorded on 9 Oct between Diyarbak\u0131r and Batman. Three Pacific Golden Plover<\/strong> Pluvialis fulva<\/em> were recorded along the Black Sea Coastland, on at Cernek on 30 Oct, probably the same on 2 Dec at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta, a single at Trabzon on 4 Dec. A single adult Great Black-headed Gull<\/strong> Larus marinus<\/em> was at K\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck\u00e7ekmece \u0130stanbul on 18 Dec. An odd juvenile Black-legged Kittiwake<\/strong> Rissa tridactyla<\/em> accompanied the anglers on Galata Bridge in \u0130stanbul on 16 Dec and a single at Samanda\u011f Hatay on 19 Nov.<\/p>\n

A male Namaqua Dove<\/strong> Oena capensis<\/em> was photographed near Bozova, \u015eanl\u0131urfa on 26 Oct. Three Central Asian shrikes showed up during autumn migration, a single Red-tailed Shrike<\/strong> Lanius phoenicuroides<\/em> was at Hatay on 11 Oct, a Isabelline<\/strong> Shrike<\/strong> Lanius isabellinus<\/em> at Rize on 27 Oct and a Steppe Grey Shrike<\/strong> Lanius meridionalis pallidirostris<\/em> at Y\u00fcksekova Hakkari on 5 Sep were photographed. 2 Sand Martin<\/strong> Riparia riparia<\/em> accompanied a group of 6 Barn Swallow<\/strong> Hirundo rustica<\/em> were regular in Suba\u015f\u0131, Hatay between 1-21 Dec. Four Waxwing<\/strong> Bombycilla garrulus<\/em> were recorded, unfortunately in the bag of hunters who apparently misidentified them as starlings, at Sarp Artvin on 23 Nov. Iraq Babbler<\/strong> Turdoides altirostris<\/em> has first observed 100 km away from Birecik at Atat\u00fcrk Damlake. A late Barred Warbler<\/strong> Sylvia nisoria<\/em> was recorded at Riva \u0130stanbul on 29 Oct. Three Asian Desert Warbler<\/strong> Sylvia nana<\/em> were recorded along the Black Sea Coastland, two at Trabzon on 13 Nov and one at neighbouring Rize on 22 Oct. The first Blyth’s Reed Warbler<\/strong> Acrocephalus dumetorum<\/em> was seen away from mistnets on 16 Aug  at De\u011firmendere Trabzon, and one was ringed at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 10 Aug. A total of 8 Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus<\/em> were recorded or ringed at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta between 26 Sep and 22 Oct, and a single recorded at Trabzon on 1 Oct. The first Dusky Warbler Phylloscopus fuscatus <\/em>was ringed at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 12 Oct, making the fourth country record.<\/p>\n

The third Black-throated Thrush<\/strong> Turdus ruficollis<\/em> was photographed at Y\u00fcksekova, Hakkari on 14 Nov. A very late Collared<\/strong> Flycatcher<\/strong> Ficedula albicollis<\/em> was recorded until 2 Dec at Hacettepe Univerity Campus in Ankara. A Red-breasted Flycatcher<\/strong> Ficedula parva<\/em> was found in Suba\u015f\u0131, Hatay between 3-16 Dec. Singles of Desert Wheatear<\/strong> Oenanthe deserti<\/em> were recorded at Hatay on 8 oct, at Riva \u0130stanbul on 18 Nov and at Yumurtal\u0131k Lagoons in Adana on 27 Nov.<\/p>\n

This winter was productive for pipits. Up to 5 Tree Pipit<\/strong> Anthus triviales<\/em> were daily observed in Suba\u015f\u0131 through the winter until 21 Dec in Suba\u015f\u0131, Hatay. A Richard’s Pipit<\/strong> Anthus richardi<\/em> 11 Dec Riva, \u0130stanbul  is the one of the few records away from the sites in Southern Turkey where they are regular in winter. However Antakya produced the forth Olive-backed Pipit<\/strong> Anthus hodgsoni<\/em> on 21 Nov at Suba\u015f\u0131 Village, where it was recorded previously. After 2012 two Snow Buntings<\/strong> Plectrophenax nivalis <\/em>were recorded at Karaburun, \u0130stanbul on 12 Dec.<\/p>\n

Among exotic species, there is a sightings of a Black Swan<\/strong> Cygnus atratus<\/em> frm Karacabey Longozu on 16 Sept, a Plum-headed Parakeet<\/strong> Psittacula cyanocephala <\/em>from Ma\u00e7ka Park\u0131, \u0130stanbul on 18 Dec, and a Mandarin Duck<\/strong> Aix galericulata<\/em> from Fethiye on 23 Oct.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
