There was 1 <strong>Common Merganser <\/strong><em>Mergus merganser <\/em>at Samsun Kurupelit Marina on 14 Dec, 2 at \u0130\u011fneada Forest on 14 Dec and 1 at Koca\u00e7ay Delta on 29 Dec. Outside of the Central Anatolian lakes, 1 <strong>White-headed Duck <\/strong><em>Oxyura leucocephala<\/em>was at Hersek Lagoon, Yalova on 22 Nov and other 4 at Koca\u00e7ay Delta on 1 Dec. A single <strong>Red-throated Loon<\/strong><em>Gavia stellatawas present <\/em>along the Mediterranean coast at G\u00f6ksu Delta on 30 Dec. The traditional waters off Didim, Ayd\u0131n for Storm Petrel <strong><em>Hydrobates pelagicus<\/em> produced 3 on 24 Aug. <\/strong>Maximum of two <strong>Horned Grebe <\/strong><em>Podiceps auritus <\/em>were at Karaburun, Istanbul on 3 and 13 Dec, but a single bird photographed at Samsun\u2019s Kurupelit Marina on 29 Dec drew more attention and even reached the national press. A two <strong>Greater Flamingo <\/strong><em>Phoenicopteurs roseus<\/em>in B\u00fcy\u00fck\u00e7ekmece \u0130stanbul on 28 Aug, and grew to the total of 4 individuals by December. <strong>Glossy Ibis <\/strong><em>Plegadis falcinellus<\/em>seems to be regular at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta, some where there on 22 Dec. Late individuals of Red-footed Falcon <em>Falco vespertinus <\/em>appeared at Samanda\u011f Hatay on 2 Nov and G\u00f6ksu Delta on 3 Nov, probably being pushed through by the same weather front. Staggering singles of <strong>Lanner Falcon <\/strong><em>Falco biarmicus <\/em>was seen on Koca\u00e7ay Delta on 1 Dec, Sultansazl\u0131\u011f\u0131 on 22 Sep.\u00a0 A long staying <strong>Black-winged Kite<\/strong> <em>Elanus caeruleus<\/em> was at Lake Mogan, Ankara between 13 and 28 Jul, and 2 at \u015eanl\u0131urfa on 18 Jul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This late autumn was also productive for migrant <strong>Little  Bustard <\/strong><em>Tetrax tetrax <\/em>arriving across the Black Sea; one at Yedik\u0131r  Damlake, Amasya on 26 Nov, a wonderful group of 6 at G\u00f6ksu Delta on 12 Dec,  being the highest count in the last decade, 2 at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 29 Oct and  a single at Lake B\u00fcy\u00fck\u00e7ekmece on 17 Dec. During earlier autumn single <strong>Corncrake <\/strong><em>Crex crex <\/em>were in Samsun on 8 Oct and K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 13 Oct.  Crakes have been seen late in autumn along the Mediterranean coastland. A <strong>Baillon&#8217;s  Crake <\/strong><em>Porzana pusilla <\/em>was at Osmaniye on 31 Oct. Last recorded in  1912 in Kars, a single<strong>Macqueen&#8217;s Bustard<em> Chlamydotis macqueenii <\/em><\/strong>that  was recovered injured in Konya province on 17 Dec, which was cured and fitted  with a satellite transmitter and released back to nature after 25 days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spur-winged Lapwing <\/strong><em>Vanellus  spinosus <\/em>may be regular in winter. 19 were in Osmaniye at  Ceyhan River on 14 Dec. A late <strong>Sociable Lapwing <\/strong><em>Vanellus gregarius<\/em> was in Karakaya Baraj\u0131 on 10 Nov. <strong>Terek Sandpiper<\/strong> <em>Xenus cinereus<\/em> was finally sighted at Hatay Samanda\u011f Beach on 31 Aug. <strong>Black-winged  Pratincole <\/strong><em>Glareola nordmanni<\/em>seems to be regular at Hanca\u011f\u0131z  Damlake, Gaziantep, where a single was resting on 10 Sep. <strong>Audouin\u2019s Gull<\/strong> <em>Larus audouini <\/em>finally reached Hatay at Samanda\u011f beack on 23 Nov. The  single adult <strong>Great Black-backed Gull<\/strong> <em>Larus marinus<\/em> at Istanbul\u2019s  Haydarpa\u015fa Harbour on 3 and 7 Dec may relate to the long staying invidivual  that has been seen since Sep 2005. 2 1st year <strong>Kittiwake <\/strong><em>Rissa  tridactyla <\/em>were at Karaburun, Istanbul on 3 Dec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A single wintering <strong>Black-bellied Sandgrouse <\/strong><em>Pterocles  orientalis <\/em>at Samanda\u011f beach in Hatay on 15 Dec make few of the wintering  birds along the E Mediterranean coast. However the highlight is certainly 120  birds at (former) Ere\u011fli Marshes on 17 Dec, where the local hunters point out  the presence of a good wintering population. Several <strong>Eurasian Eagle Owl<\/strong><em> Bubo bubo <\/em>at wetlands may related to wandering immatures; one at Ayval\u0131k  Cunda Island on 1 Oct, one at Koca\u00e7ay Delta on 30 Nov and another at Sultan  marshes on 15 Dec. Arriving singles of <strong>Short-eared Owl<\/strong> <em>Asio flammeus<\/em> appeared along the coastland, singles at Koca\u00e7ay Delta on 13 Oct, Rize coast on  2 Oct and K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 21 Oct. The first wintering <strong>Great Spotted  Cuckoo<\/strong> <em>Clamator glandarius<\/em> was at Milleyha Hatay on 7 Dec. A single <strong>Alpine  Swift <\/strong><em>Tachymarptis melba <\/em>was in downtown K\u0131rklareli on 6 Dec, making  the few late records outside of Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A single migrant <strong>Blue-cheeked Bee-eater<em> Merops  persicus <\/em><\/strong>was at Osmaniye K\u0131rm\u0131tl\u0131 on 31 Aug. and a wintering Hoopoe on  5 Dec at the same site. One of the few records of <strong>Blyth\u2019s Reed Warbler<\/strong> <em>Acrocephalus  dumetorum<\/em> was made at the Ringing Station at Cernek, K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 31  Aug. The regular passage of <strong>Booted Warbler<\/strong> <em>Hippolais caligata <\/em>is  once more proven with one at Yorma Trabzon on 2 Sep, 2 at Rize coastland on 3  Sep and one in Antakya on 19 Sep. A single <strong>Asian Desert Warbler <\/strong><em>Sylvia  nana <\/em>arrived at Antalya on 5 Dec after cold arriving to the highlands.<strong>Spectacled Warbler<\/strong><em>Sylvia conspicillata <\/em>was at its second  known location, Hatay Bal\u0131k Lake on 21 Dec. There was a good influx of\u00a0 <strong>Inornate (Yellow-browed) Warbler<\/strong><em>Phylloscopus  inornatus <\/em>across Turkey; 1 at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 13 Oct, 1 at 19 Oct, 2 at  20 Oct and 2 at 27 Oct, a single in Osmaniye along Ceyhan river on 27 Oct and 3  on a plane tree at Olympos Ruins, Antalya on 8 Nov. An organised seach for  other species yielded the first country record of <strong>Dusky Warbler <\/strong><em>Phylloscopus  fuscatus <\/em>at K\u0131z\u0131l\u0131rmak Delta on 24 Oct. <strong>Desert Wheatear <\/strong><em>Oenanthe  deserti <\/em>seems to arrive later than warblers; singles at Samanda\u011f, Hatay on  2 Nov and Zonguldak at 3 Nov. Even later arrived two <strong>Waxwing<\/strong> <em>Bombycilla  garrulus<\/em>on 24 Dec at K\u0131z\u0131\u0131rmak Delta. <strong>Buff-bellied  Pipit <\/strong><em>Anthus rubescens <\/em>were at the tradition Milleyha beach  in Hatay a single<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ali Atahan, Nizamettin Yavuz and Kerem Ali Boyla The cold weather arrived early this winter brought some interesting waterfowl before the end of the year.
